Appointment of UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights

1. Director-General for International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Kang Kyung-
wha, was appointed Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations.  She will begin 
her work on January 1, 2007. 

2. UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights is in charge of UN's overall activities for human rights.  
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) was established in 1993 by the 
recommendation of the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, and its headquarter is located in 
Geneva. 

3. UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights is the second highest position in the OHCHR and it is 
on the level of Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) in the UN system. 

4. Director-General Kang's appointment as UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights is noted as a 
major achievement of the ROK's diplomacy in the field of human rights.
