1. Former Prime Minister, Lee Hae-chan visited Peru from July 25 to 29 to attend the presidential
inauguration ceremony of Peru on July 28, 2006, as a special envoy of President Roh Moo-hyun. He paid a
courtesy call on incoming President Alan Garcia to convey congratulations on the launch of the new Peruvian
government and deliver a congratulatory letter by President Roh Moo-hyun hoping for the further
development of friendly and cooperative ties between the ROK and Peru.
2. President Garcia expressed his deep gratitude to President Roh Moo-hyun for dispatching a high-level
special envoy to his inauguration ceremony, and asked Special Envoy Lee to convey his compliments to
President Roh. He also hoped for the further development of bilateral relations during his term in office.
3. Special Envoy Lee also met with incoming Vice President Luis Giampietri and expressed his satisfaction
about the significant enhancement of bilateral cooperation particularly in the fields of natural gas, minerals,
automobiles and electronics. Vice President Giampietri expressed his hope that the ROK would transfer its
technology to Peru in the field of aquaculture.
4. Special Envoy Lee also met with representatives of the Korean community and Korean businessmen in
Peru to encourage them and explain the recent situation in the ROK and on the Korean Peninsula.
5. The ROK and Peru have traditional friendly and cooperative ties. The bilateral trade amount was recorded
at over 530 million dollars in 2005, and there are about 800 Koreans living in Peru. The two countries
maintain close cooperative ties in various fields including the international arena, economy and trade,
science and IT.
