1. The government of the Republic of Korea has decided to extend humanitarian assistance of US$200,000 in cash to the Republic of Madagascar to help the country respond to the measles outbreak.
° According to the World Health Organization (WHO), after the first measles case was confirmed in October 2018, as of March 12, 2019, 72,000 people were infected with measles, with another 640 killed by the disease.
2. The assistance from the ROK government is expected to help to improve the critical healthcare situation in Madagascar.
3. Madagascar achieved a democratic transfer of power by conducting a peaceful election in January 2019. The ROK government is deepening and broadening the scope of its friendly and cooperative ties with the government of Madagascar, as can be seen from its dispatch of a delegation to the inauguration ceremony of new President Rajoelina.
