Roundtable to Prepare for “2nd Summit for Democracy” Takes Place

1. A roundtable to prepare for the “2nd Summit for Democracy” took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 20 under the title “Democracy, Anti-Corruption, and Experience of the Republic of Korea.”


o Dr. Lee Sook Jong, Professor of Sungkyunkwan University and Senior Fellow of the East Asia Institute, presided over the roundtable. In Session 1, Dr. Han Sung Min, Associate Professor of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, gave a presentation on Korea’s history and experience in anti-corruption, while Dr. Kim Nam Kyu, Professor of Korea University, gave a presentation on democracy and anti-corruption in Session 2.


o Members of academia and the civil society, through their discussions, sought ways to share Korea’s experience of advancing anti-corruption and democracy with the international community.


※ Information on the “2nd Summit for Democracy”


- Date: March 29-30, 2023


- Composition: ① (March 29) Video conference led by the leaders of co-host countries / ② (March 30) Conference led by ministerial-level officials in each region


- Co-hosts: Korea (Indo-Pacific), Netherlands (Europe), Zambia (Africa), and Costa Rica (Latin America)


- The Korean government will host the Indo-Pacific region conference on anti-corruption.


2. In his opening remarks, Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Park Yong Min underscored the commitment of the Korean government to contribute to peace and prosperity of the international community, based on values and norms, such as freedom, human rights, and the rule of law. He also highlighted the importance of partnerships with academia and the civil society for successful hosting of the “2nd Summit for Democracy.”


3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue preparations for the successful hosting of the “2nd Summit for Democracy” to be held in March 2023, in continuous consultation with relevant Ministries, the civil society, and academia.
