Korea Submits its Nationally Determined Contribution and Long-term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategy to UNFCCC Secretariat

1. On December 30, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a National Focal Point of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, submitted Korea’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and its Long-term low greenhouse gas Emission Development Strategy (LEDS), namely, “2050 Carbon Neutral Strategy of the Republic of Korea towards a sustainable and green society,” to the UNFCCC Secretariat according to the Paris Agreement on climate change.

 

° After the Korean texts of the NDC and LEDS had been finalized at the Cabinet meeting on December 15, the English versions were written and submitted to the UNFCCC Secretariat after being screened by the relevant agencies.

 

2. The NDC includes a pledge to the international community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and presents Korea’s target to reduce 24.4% from its national greenhouse gas emissions in 2017.

 

3. LEDS includes Korea’s long-term vision and national strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
