1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ASEAN, a cooperation partner for Korea’s New Southern Policy that has forged a strategic partnership with Korea, agreed to establish director-general-level “ASEAN-ROK Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change” with the aim of strengthening cooperation and deepening solidarity on environmental issues and climate change.
o Ten ASEAN member countries are all parties to the Paris Agreement and making efforts to achieve the goals of economic growth and environmental protection and response to climate change at the same time.
2. The 1st ASEAN-ROK Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change will be held on the occasion of the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on the Environment in 2021 (date yet to be decided).
3. The ASEAN-ROK Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change is ASEAN’s third bilateral consultative mechanism on environmental and climate issues following Japan and the EU. Through the dialogue, Korea will seek to discuss ways to expand and strengthen policy and technical cooperation in areas of interest, including air pollution, marine environment (marine pollution and plastic litter), forests, circular economy, P4G, and climate change (ASEAN-ROK Carbon Dialogue, mitigation, adaptation, and climate science).
