1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with Mr. Philippe Errera, Director-General for Political Affairs and Security of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic, held “the 4th Republic of Korea-French Republic high-level consultation on the North Korean nuclear issue” over the phone on the afternoon of November 25, and had an in-depth discussion on bilateral collaboration for complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
2. Amb. Lee shared the assessments of the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and explained in detail the various efforts the ROK government is making for North Korea’s return to dialogue. Director-General Errera expressed support for such efforts of the ROK government, adding that France will continue to cooperate and render assistance as necessary.
° The two sides noted with appreciation that, despite COVID-19, the two countries are communicating closely on issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and agreed to continue consultations in various ways, including in-person meetings as the situation permits.
3. The high-level consultation has served as an opportunity to further step up coordination on Korean Peninsula issues with France, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, one of the ROK’s closest friends and a key member state of the European Union that is recently seeking to enhance its international standing and role; and to be reaffirmed of the French government’s firm support for the Korean Peninsula peace process.
