2nd International Conference on Action with Women and Peace to be Held

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the “2nd International Conference on Action with Women and Peace” under the theme “Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict: Ensuring a Survivor-centered Approach” in a hybrid online and offline format at 20:00, November 24.

 

o The second “International Conference on Action with Women and Peace,” held this year following the first one last year, is part of the “Action with Women and Peace” Initiative launched by the government of the Republic of Korea in 2018 and aims to explore ways to strengthen international cooperation to eliminate sexual violence in conflict around the world.

 

2. At the upcoming conference to be attended by representatives of countries leading the women, peace and security agenda, international organizations, academia, and organizations that support survivors of sexual violence in conflict, participants will discuss various topics, including measures to respond to sexual violence in conflict amid the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to promote a survivor-centered approach, and future challenges.

 

o At the event, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha will deliver opening remarks, and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Minister of State of the United Kingdom Lord Ahmad, Canada's Ambassador for Women, Peace, and Security Jacqueline O'Neill, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict Pramila Patten, Dr. Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad who jointly won the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize, and Special Envoy for the UN Refugee Agency Angelina Jolie will attend as speakers and share various experiences and opinions.

 

o In addition, there will be an opportunity to share the creative voices of future generations through the screening session of the winning entries of the 2020 Global Youth Video Competition on the issue.

 

3. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects that the conference will facilitate global discussions on the women, peace, and security agenda including sexual violence in conflict, and thereby strengthen the ROK’s contribution in the area and contribute to developing the issue into one of the major areas in multilateral diplomacy led by the ROK.
