11th ROK-NATO Policy Consultation Takes Place

1. The 11th Republic of Korea-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) policy consultation was held on October 30 in a virtual format, with Director-General for International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chung Byung-ha and NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Bettina Cadenbach leading their respective delegations.

 

o After joining NATO as one of its “Partners across the globe” in 2006, the ROK has held the policy consultation with the organization since 2008. The 10th meeting was held in Brussels, the Kingdom of Belgium, in October 2018.

 

2. In the policy consultation, the two sides enhanced mutual understanding on the situations on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia and in Europe, and had extensive discussions on various issues including ways to increase bilateral cooperation.

 

o The ROK side explained key policies including the establishment of permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and the Northeast Asia Platform for Peace and Cooperation, and asked for NATO’s continuous support.

 

o The two sides agreed to continue cooperation in areas including cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, disaster relief, and stabilization efforts in Afghanistan.

 

3. The ROK and NATO which share such values as peace, democracy, and human rights have shared the view that this year’s policy consultation served as a valuable opportunity to further enhance cooperation between the two sides.
