1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had a telephone consultation with Mr. Stephen Biegun, Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea of the United States, on the morning of September 2, Korea Standard Time.
2. The two sides shared their assessments of the recent situation on the Korean Peninsula and drew a common understanding that the early resumption of dialogue between the Republic of Korea and North Korea as well as between the U.S. and North Korea is crucial in order to make substantive progress toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula. The two chief negotiators also discussed the conditions and the ways to work together to that end.
3. In this regard, the ROK and the U.S. agreed to further strengthen communication and cooperation on North Korea issues in the future by actively utilizing major international diplomatic events at bilateral and multilateral levels.
