FM Meets with African Union’s Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security Bineta Diop

1. On the afternoon of July 1, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha met with Ms. Bineta Diop, Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security of the African Union (AU) Commission who is on a visit to the Republic of Korea. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on ways to strengthen the ROK-AU cooperation.

2. Minister Kang commended the AU for launching the framework for reporting and monitoring on the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in February, and for continuing efforts to mainstream women’s participation in the areas of peace and security in Africa. The Minister added that the government of the Republic of Korea provides comprehensive support for peace-related activities in Africa, particularly focusing on the areas of women, peace and security and voiced hope to see the ROK-AU cooperation strengthen further in the future.

3. Special Envoy Diop extended appreciation for inviting her to the 1st International Conference on “Action with Women and Peace” to take place on July 2-3; took note of the fact that the ROK is cooperating with the AU, especially in peace, security and women’s empowerment in Africa; and expressed hope that the ROK-AU cooperation will be enhanced in various areas, including the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

4. The meeting with the Special Envoy, which took place during her visit to the ROK for the 1st International Conference on “Action with Women and Peace,” is seen to have served as an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views on issues such as the AU’s work to implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda; as well as an opportunity to reaffirm the commitment of the ROK and the AU to continued cooperation.
