We, the Foreign Ministers of Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia (MIKTA), express grave concern over the sixth nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) on 3 September 2017. The recent nuclear test following the launch of ICBM-class ballistic missiles, and all those preceding it, is not only a clear violation of DPRK’s obligations under the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions but a grave and serious challenge to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and to the international community.

We reiterate the Joint Communiqué of the 8^th MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (November 2016) which stresses that North Korea’s violations of its international obligations undermine the rules-based international order based on the UN Charter that MIKTA aspires to uphold.

We strongly urge the DPRK to immediately and fully comply with all its international obligations including by implementing related UN Security Council Resolutions.

All parties stand to benefit from the creation and maintenance of international peace and stability, particularly by attaining denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

In this regard, we also call for the acceleration of the entry into force of the CTBT in order to achieve a world free of any tests and nuclear explosion.
