President Moon Jae-in, who is on an official working visit to the United States, held a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in the afternoon on May 22 (local time). The two Presidents reached an agreement to make utmost efforts so that the North Korea-United States summit scheduled for June 12 would proceed without any disruption.

The two Presidents gave an evaluation of the North's recent attitudes toward their two countries and exchanged ideas on how to alleviate anxieties the North might have over the survival of its regime after having declared its will for complete denuclearization for the first time.

Noting that there was no need to question the North's commitment to holding the North Korea-U.S. summit, President Moon underscored that North Korea and the United States needed to have consultations on substantive and concrete denuclearization as well as on ensuring the security of the North Korean regime.

President Moon predicted that inter-Korean talks, including high-level meetings, would be resumed after the conclusion of the Max Thunder Korea-U.S. joint military exercise on May 25, which North Korea criticized.

The two leaders also exchanged opinions on ways for the two Koreas and the United States to declare an end to the Korean War after the North Korea-U.S. summit, which was included in the Panmunjeom Declaration as agreed between the two Koreas.
