<Public Diplomacy with Ball to Promote ROK in Kenya>

1. The team for public diplomacy with ball, which has been selected for the Foreign Ministry’s 2017 Public Diplomacy Project of Korean Citizens, engaged in activities to promote the Republic of Korea in the African country of Kenya. The team for public diplomacy with ball, chosen for the Tembea Duniani project (Tembea Duniani means “walk around the world” in Kenyan language), manufactured globe balls with Dokdo and the East Sea marked on them for themselves, and carried out activities to explain the ROK’s territory and location and introduce Korean culture to students in Kenya for three weeks from June 25 to July 15.

o The Tembea Duniani project, selected as one of 12 programs for the Foreign Ministry’s 2017 Public Diplomacy Project of Korean Citizens, aims to perform public diplomacy activities with globe balls towards students in Africa with poor conditions compared to other areas. The globe balls can be utilized as education materials and used by students themselves for various types of play.

2. By using globe balls, the team for public diplomacy with ball introduced the ROK to Kenyan students and gave them correct information on the ROK’s territory, including the East Sea and Dokdo. After the class, the team also played a range of games with the students, helping them feel close to and think positively about the ROK. The Tembea Duniani project was conducted for about 1,000 students of elementary schools in Kenya’s Kajiado, Nairobi and Mombasa. About 3,000 self-made globe balls were donated to the elementary schools.

o Head of the team Kim Samuel, who planned the project, said that “carrying out public diplomacy projects overseas in person, I felt that it is not that easy to promote the ROK and win the hearts and minds of the people in foreign countries,” adding that “tangible results of public diplomacy could be achieved only after they open their hearts and come closer to us.”

3. The Foreign Ministry is carrying out various public diplomacy programs in which the ROK people participate in person, and will continue to actively implement cultural diplomacy programs using soft power together with the people.
