<Outcome of Meeting between ROK and Hungarian Directors-General for Cultural Affairs>

1. The meeting took place in Budapest, Hungary, on July 3, with Director-General for Cultural Affairs Lee Eun-yong of the Foreign Ministry and his Hungarian counterpart Laszlo Vizi leading their respective delegations. The meeting with Hungary, an outpost for the ROK’s cultural diplomacy in Central Eastern Europe, marked the second of its kind held in 27 years following the inaugural round in 1990.

2. At the meeting, the two countries reviewed the progress in their cultural cooperation; and exchanged views on ways to work together on events marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations as well as in the fields of culture, arts, youth affairs and sports.

○ The two sides noted with appreciation their efforts to steadily step up cooperation in the full range of relevant areas, including culture, arts, education and sports, since the conclusion of the bilateral Agreement on Cultural Cooperation; and voiced hope to further discuss ways to boost cultural exchanges and cooperation in a wider range of areas.

3. The two sides, in particular, drew a common understanding that various cultural events to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties will lead to more robust cultural exchanges across the board and help bolster the foundation of cooperation in the long term. They also agreed to work together to make a success of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

4. Starting with the meeting on July 3, the two sides are expected to continue close consultations regarding the special occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Going forward, the ROK Foreign Ministry, through soft power-based cultural diplomacy to win hearts of Hungarians, will seek further to promote its friendly and cooperative ties with Hungary.
