ㅇ The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Korea. Over the past three decades, cooperation has deepened, particularly in people-to-people links. As of June 2025, about 17,000 Lao nationals were living and working in Korea, a figure more than double that of the previous year.
ㅇThe significant growth in Lao workers is primarily attributed to the Employment Permit System (EPS), which allows small and medium-sized enterprises in Korea to hire foreign workers. This system, along with recent expansions into seasonal work and the fisheries sector, has created more opportunities.
ㅇTo ensure the safety and welfare of these workers, both governments have implemented protective measures. Lao employees receive mandatory pre-departure training, and Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor operates a 24-hour counseling hotline with services in the Lao language. Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRDK) also provides support to help workers adjust. These efforts underscore the commitment of both countries to maintain a safe and sustainable labor exchange.
