Korea and Kenya established diplomatic relations in 1964, marking 61 years of friendship this year. Kenya holds a special place in Korea’s history as the first country in sub-Saharan Africa where we established an embassy. Furthermore, Kenya is a key representative nation of East Africa and an important partner in the Korean government’s Indo-Pacific strategy, which promotes freedom, peace, and prosperity.
Our two nations, sharing the values of democracy and a market economy, have been deepening and expanding cooperation across various fields, including high-level exchanges, economic and trade relations, public diplomacy, development cooperation, climate change initiatives, and people-to-people exchanges.
In 2024, numerous events were held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Korea-Kenya diplomatic relations, including tree planting ceremony of the Korean national flower (Mugunghwa) and a joint contemporary art exhibition at the Nairobi National Museum. Notably, President William Ruto of Kenya visited Korea again in 2024 following his previous visit in 2022, attending the Korea-Africa Summit and engaging in in-depth discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation. This milestone is expected to further solidify and enhance our partnership.
Our embassy remains committed to ensuring the safety and rights of Korean businesses, expatriates, and visitors in Kenya while supporting the expansion of exchanges between our two peoples.
Additionally, our embassy oversees relations with Somalia, working to promote friendly cooperation between Korea and Somalia through development assistance, scholarship programs, and other collaborative initiatives.
Thank you.
