Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Soosuk Lim

March 21, 2023  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

This morning, the Korean government notified, in writing and through diplomatic channels, the Japanese government of its decision to revoke the two official letters that the former sent to the latter in 2019 with regard to the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) between the two countries.

By taking this measure, the Korean government removed institutional uncertainties regarding the Korea-Japan GSOMIA, paving the way for strengthening Korea-Japan and Korea-U.S.-Japan cooperation on military information.

As agreed upon by the leaders of Korea and Japan in their summit talks on March 16, the Korean government will seek to further step up close Korea-Japan and Korea-U.S.-Japan security cooperation to respond to increasingly escalating nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.

(A question-and-answer session followed.)
