1. The Secretariat of the UN notified the Korean government that Han Bi-ya, a relief activist, was
appointed a member of the Advisory Group of the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for
a three-year term from 2011 to 2014.
2. The CERF is a fund organized for the purpose of financing UN’s humanitarian assistance activities,
with its annual funds of USD 500 million raised from the contributions from member states, and is
primarily responsible for swiftly funding the initial relief effort by the UN in case of urgent emergency.
The CERF advisors are expected to provide recommendations on various subjects including the
efficient use of the fund.
3. The latest appointment of a second Korean on the CERF Advisory Group is the result of the
UN’s recognition of: (1) Korea’s dedicated effort to enhance interest in and contribution to humanitarian
assistance activities by the international community; (2) Han Bi-ya’s rich on-the-ground experience
as a relief activist.
