June 13, 2009
1. The Government of the Republic of Korea welcomes and supports Security Council resolution 1874
adopted unanimously on June 13 (Korean time, June 12 local time) which imposes additional sanctions
against North Korea reflecting the common concern of the international community on North Korea's
second nuclear test on May 25, 2009.
2. The Security Council resolution condemns in the strongest terms North Korea's nuclear test and
strengthens the sanctions regime including expansion of arms embargo, intensified inspection of cargos
to and from North Korea and increased financial and economic sanctions, while stepping up implementation
and monitoring mechanism. The Government of the Republic of Korea finds the resolution to clearly reflect
the united and resolute will of the Security Council to prohibit North Korea's nuclear development and
nuclear proliferation.
3. The Government urges North Korea to heed the manifest and firm message of the international
community expressed in the resolution and dismantle all its nuclear weapons programs and suspend
all activities related to its ballistic missile program.
4. The Government once again urges North Korea to cease acts of provocation and promptly return to
the Six-Party Talks to make genuine progress in denuclearization.
5. The Government will closely cooperate with concerned countries under the firm principle that
a nuclear North Korea is unacceptable by all means and make every effort for the resolution of
the North Korean nuclear issue and the enhancement of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
