Foreign Minister Meets with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State




1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong received a courtesy call from U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman on the morning of July 22 and exchanged views on the follow-up measures to the recent ROK-U.S. Summit, Korean Peninsula issues, and regional and global affairs.


 


2. Foreign Minister Chung offered his congratulations to Deputy Secretary Sherman, who has extensive expertise on the ROK-U.S. Alliance and the North Korean nuclear issue, on assuming her position and asked her to closely communicate and cooperate with her ROK partners to further advance the Alliance.


 


o Deputy Secretary Sherman said that her visit reflects the great importance the U.S. attaches to the ROK-U.S. Alliance, which is the linchpin of peace, security, and prosperity in Northeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, and reiterated her commitment to work toward the advancement of the Alliance.


 


3. Foreign Minister Chung emphasized the comprehensive achievements made at the ROK-U.S. Summit held in May, which cover diverse areas including Alliance issues, Korean Peninsula issues, economic and substantive cooperation, and global issues, and asked for Deputy Secretary Sherman’s close cooperation in ensuring full implementation of the follow-up measures. 




o Foreign Minister Chung and Deputy Secretary Sherman reaffirmed their commitment to complete denuclearization and establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, which is a shared goal confirmed by the leaders of the ROK and the U.S. during their recent Summit, and shared the view that diplomacy and dialogue are essential for achieving the goal. Foreign Minister Chung and Deputy Secretary Sherman committed to continuing close cooperation at all levels to bring North Korea back to dialogue.


 


4. Foreign Minister Chung and Deputy Secretary Sherman also exchanged views on other regional and global issues such as the situation in Myanmar and climate change, and agreed to deepen cooperation in addressing those issues.
