ROK Ambassador to the UN Elected the President of the Executive Board of UN Women

1. At the meeting of the UN Women, the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, 
held at the UN Headquarters in New York on January 24, the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to the 
UN Kim Sook was elected the President of the Executive Board of the UN Women for the year 2012.

- Ambassador Kim was endorsed as the Asian Group’s presidential candidate in August 2011 and elected 
by the consent of Executive Board members of other regional Groups. 

2. The UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, 
created in 2011 by merging four previously distinct parts of the UN system which dealt separately with 
women’s and gender issues. Its Executive Board comprises 41 member states and makes major 
decisions regarding the organization’s operational activities.

- The ROK, elected to the inaugural Board (2011-2013 term), is currently serving on the Board.

3. As President of the Executive Board for 2012, Ambassador Kim will preside over the Board’s three 
meetings to be held in 2012, and thereby is expected to contribute greatly to international efforts to promote 
gender equality and women’s empowerment across the world.
