Government awaits new electoral body before revising voter list
Following the Council of Ministers on 9 September 2026, government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly stated that the revision of Côte d’Ivoire’s electoral list will only take place after the establishment of a new electoral management body. Although the electoral law normally provides for an annual revision, the process is currently tied to the ongoing reform that includes the dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission. No specific date has been set, as discussions on the new institutional framework are still under way.
Ivorian opposition has decided to unite to push for electoral reform
Several Ivorian opposition forces are moving toward a common position on the reform of the country’s electoral system, following the government’s dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI). On September 9, representatives of the CAP-CI led by Pascal Affi N’Guessan, ADCI led by Assalé Tiémoko, Simone Ehivet Gbagbo’s political grouping, and the PDCI-RDA met in Cocody to coordinate their positions. The parties agreed to work toward presenting a joint proposal to the government on the composition and functioning of the new electoral body.
The opposition is particularly demanding an inclusive political dialogue before the government submits its draft legislation to Parliament. Leaders argue that the future electoral body should not result from a unilateral government decision, but should reflect the concerns of all political stakeholders. The PDCI-RDA likewise stressed that electoral reform is not merely an administrative matter but an issue affecting the broader political life of the nation. The opposition views consensus-building as essential to restoring confidence in the electoral process and preventing future political crises.
France- Côte d’Ivoire : Côte d’Ivoire and France are intensifying their military cooperation
It happened yesterday in Paris, Côte d’Ivoire and France have reaffirmed their intention to give new momentum to their military cooperation, following discussions. The two countries are seeking to strengthen their defence partnership within a changing regional security environment, with particular attention to cooperation between their armed forces.
The renewed cooperation reflects the continued importance of the Ivorian–French security relationship, even as France has been restructuring its military presence in West Africa. For Abidjan, closer military cooperation with Paris can support training, capacity building and the strengthening of Côte d’Ivoire’s role as a security partner in the Gulf of Guinea and the wider West African region.
Germany- Côte d’Ivoire : CCI-CI president has urged turning Côte d’Ivoire-Germany business opportunities into investments
At the Côte d’Ivoire-Germany Economic Forum in Abidjan on 8 September 2026, CCI-CI President Faman Touré called on Ivorian and German businesses to deepen partnerships and convert trade opportunities into concrete investments, jobs, and local value addition. He highlighted 2025 trade of about 950 billion FCFA (with strong Ivorian exports of cocoa, rubber, cashew, and mangoes) and stressed the need to shift from raw-material trade toward industrialisation, technology transfer, and joint innovation. The forum featured panels on priority projects, public procurement, and the attractiveness of the Ivorian market to foster lasting private-sector collaboration.
USA- Côte d’Ivoire : Côte d’Ivoire and the United States are exploring cooperation to protect children online
On 8 September 2026 in Abidjan, First Lady Dominique Ouattara met with U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Junaid Munir to discuss strengthening cooperation on child protection and well-being in the digital space and artificial intelligence. As reported, the talks focused on Melania Trump’s “Building the Future Together” initiative, under which Côte d’Ivoire is among the priority countries, and explored ways to submit and implement projects with U.S. support. Both sides agreed to work in the coming weeks on concrete initiatives to create a safer online environment for children.
