We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of the Honourable Marc Garneau.
As the first Canadian in space, he was a national hero to all Canadians. As a respected politician, including serving as Minister of Transport and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Garneau was committed to strengthening Korea-Canada relations and supported the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula.
Following his retirement as a Member of Parliament, Mr. Garneau continued his contributions as the newly appointed Canadian Chair of the Canada-Korea Forum, enhancing the stature of the Forum and upgrading our bilateral relationship. In motivating the Forum to be bold and to seek out new areas where tangible outcomes could benefit our two countries, Mr. Garneau led one of the largest Forums in its over two-decade history, held for the first time in his hometown of Montreal.
We will honour and continue Mr. Garneau’s legacy as an extraordinary person, an exceptional public servant and a dear friend to Korea and its people.
We, on behalf of the Korean Embassy and the Korea-Canada Forum, extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Garneau’s family, friends and colleagues on this tremendous loss.
May he rest in peace.
