A Message by

the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade

to Celebrate the Launch of the 1st Korea-Italy Forum in Rome

It gives me great pleasure to offer my congratulations on the launch of the 1st Korea-Italy Forum in Rome.  I am confident that this event will prove a valuable opportunity to explore ways to still further deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Italy.

Today’s Forum comes just two days before the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries.  The developments in our relations over the last 120 years have been tremendous and I look forward to still more advances in our ties as we move forward to meet new challenges in the future.  In fact, I had the valuable opportunity of attending a reception hosted by the Italian Embassy in Seoul on June 2nd to mark Italy’s National Day as well as the 120th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic ties.  This is a demonstration of the Korean government's firm commitment to the promotion of our bilateral ties.

Korea and Italy have continued to share an interest in exploring ways to foster common prosperity through mutual cooperation by endeavouring to identify complementary factors in all sectors, spanning the whole spectrum : from commerce and trade, to science and technology, and also cultural exchanges.  Based on our common goals of establishing peace and democracy around the world, our two countries are actively cooperating to help resolve major international issues, such as the reconstruction of Iraq.  I am sure that this Forum will serve as a vehicle for the further enhancement of friendship and cooperation between our two peoples and governments.

Furthermore, this Forum is expected to allow participants to gain a deeper understanding of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the problems it faces, which has significant implications for a peaceful and prosperous future for the region and the world as a whole. It could be a good occasion to have a deeper insight into recent developments of the European Union.

Lastly, I wish to express my gratitude to the high officials and leaders from both countries for being present here today, united by the common goal of enhancing our friendship and understanding.  My gratitude also goes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy for the wonderful arrangements made and warm hospitality extended for the 1st Korea-Italy Forum.

Once again, I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Italy, and my sincere wishes for highly fruitful results from this Forum.

Thank you.
