Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Choi Youngsam

August 17, 2021 14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

First, I will tell you about the departure from Afghanistan of a Korean national and officials of the Korean diplomatic mission in Afghanistan.

As already announced, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that at around 9 a.m., today, August 17, Korea Standard Time, one Korean national who was under the protection of the Korean diplomatic mission, together with three officials of the diplomatic mission including the Ambassador who remained in the country to support the departure of the Korean national, left Afghanistan on a plane to a third country in the Middle East.

Next, the Korean government has decided to provide 1 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian assistance to Haiti, which was struck by a powerful earthquake that caused serious damage and casualties.

The humanitarian assistance comes after President Moon Jae-in, in his message of condolence sent to Prime Minister of Haiti Ariel Henry yesterday, August 16, extended condolences to the people of Haiti, wished for a speedy recovery from the earthquake, and expressed willingness to participate in the international community’s humanitarian efforts.

The Korean government hopes that its assistance will help bring stability to the lives of the people of Haiti and contribute to the relief efforts.
