Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Relations Kim In-chul

September 8, 2020  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha will attend ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings to be held on September 9 and 12 in a virtual format.

In the upcoming series of meetings, Minister Kang will stress the need for solidarity and cooperation amid the COVID-19 situation, and discuss the Korean Peninsula peace process as well as ways to deepen cooperation between the Republic of Korea and ASEAN. The meetings are expected to serve as an opportunity to maintain the momentum of diplomacy with ASEAN, which has been strengthened on the occasion of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit last year, as well as to ask the international community again for their attention and efforts regarding the Korean Peninsula peace process.

Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jong Kun will hold a consultation with Deputy Secretary of State of the United States Stephen Biegun in Washington, D.C., the U.S., on September 10 at the latter’s invitation. Vice Minister Choi and Deputy Secretary Biegun had their first phone conversation last week and agreed to meet as early as possible. In the consultation on September 10, the two sides will extensively discuss issues of mutual interest, including the overall ROK-U.S. relations and regional affairs.

(A question-and-answer session followed.)
