June 9, 2020 14:30 KST
Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha will attend a webinar titled “Democracy in the time of Corona” today, June 9, along with the foreign ministers of the Kingdom of Sweden and the Commonwealth of Australia, and other participants.
The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, which will co-host the webinar with the Embassy of Sweden in the Republic of Korea, was established in Sweden in 1995. At the upcoming webinar, to be held to discuss the way forward for democracy amid the COVID-19 situation, Minister Kang will explain the government of the Republic of Korea’s principles of openness, transparency, and civic engagement, as well as its experience in holding a parliamentary election.
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Taeho will attend the “Ministerial Video Call of the Stockholm Initiative on Nuclear Disarmament and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)” today.
The Ministerial Meeting of the Stockholm Initiative, co-hosted by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Kingdom of Sweden and attended by 16 non-nuclear weapon states, was first held last year to prepare for the NPT Review Conference. In the forthcoming meeting, participants will take stock of preparations for the upcoming Review Conference, which has been postponed possibly to next year, and discuss ways to promote a successful outcome of the Review Conference.
