4th ROK-Japan-China Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on Arctic to Take Place

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold the Fourth Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on the Arctic in Busan on June 25 and 26. Mr. Park Heung kyeong, Ambassador for Arctic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Yamamoto Eiji, Ambassador in charge of Arctic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Mr. Gao Feng, Special Representative for Arctic Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, will convene as Heads of Delegation (HoDs) to discuss ways to strengthen the trilateral cooperation on the Arctic.

 

° The Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on the Arctic, first held in Seoul on April 28, 2016, as agreed by the leaders of the three countries in their Sixth Trilateral Summit held on November 1, 2015, has since taken place in the three countries on an annual and rotational basis.

 

2. As proposed by the ROK that a pilot meeting of Arctic experts be held in conjunction with the Trilateral High-Level Dialogue, a Trilateral Arctic Expert Group (TAEG) meeting will take place ahead of the Fourth Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on the Arctic.

 

° At the meeting, Korean experts, including from the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), will discuss potential areas of cooperation on the Arctic with experts from Japan and China.

 

The Trilateral Arctic Expert Group (TAEG) meeting will be held on the afternoon of June 25 and the Fourth Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on the Arctic on the morning of June 26.

 

3. The Trilateral High-Level Dialogue on the Arctic, which was launched at the initiative of the ROK, will be held for the fourth time. The ROK will make efforts for the 2019 Dialogue to serve as a platform to further deepen the trilateral cooperation on the Arctic.
