Outcome of Telephone Conversation between Foreign Minister and ICRC President

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha had a telephone conversation with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on the afternoon of April 13 at the latter’s request and discussed the progress in the responses of the Republic of Korea and the ICRC to COVID-19 and ways to enhance their cooperation.

2. Minister Kang commended the ICRC for playing a significant role at the forefront of the unprecedented humanitarian crisis, which was caused by the global spread of COVID-19, including by rendering assistance to vulnerable populations. She went on to explain that the ROK government, on its part, has been making endeavors to curb the spread of the virus at home, while actively participating in the international community’s efforts to respond to COVID-19 by extending humanitarian assistance at bilateral and multilateral levels.

3. President Maurer highly appreciated the ROK’s effective response to COVID-19, mentioned that the ICRC, on its part, has lately been carrying out various programs in response to COVID-19, and voiced hope to step up cooperation with the ROK in rendering assistance to vulnerable regions across the world, among others.


4. The two sides noted with appreciation that the ROK-ICRC cooperation has continued to strengthen and agreed to keep up cooperation in responding to humanitarian crises around the world.
