2. Vice Minister Lee commended High Commissioner Bachelet for her hard work in responding to the human rights crises around the world and overcoming new challenges in cooperation with governments and civil societies of member states since her appointment in 2018. He added that the government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) will contribute more actively to the international efforts to promote human rights through activities at the Human Rights Council from 2020.

- High Commissioner Bachelet extended congratulations to the ROK on being elected to serve on the Human Rights Council from 2020 as well as appreciation to the ROK government for its strong support for the activities of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). She also voiced hope that the ROK and the OHCHR would further step up cooperation in promoting human rights around the world.

3. Vice Minister Lee mentioned that in a bid to contribute actively to the international community’s discussions on women, peace and security and particularly to the efforts to respond to sexual violence in conflict, the ROK government had launched the “Action with Women and Peace” initiative in June 2018 and had held the 1st International Conference in July 2019. On that note, he asked for the OHCHR’s continued interest in and support for the initiative.

 
4. Vice Minister Lee also mentioned that the resolution titled “New and emerging technologies and human rights” had been adopted under the leadership of the ROK government at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council in June 2019, adding that the ROK government intends to continue playing a leading role in the area.

- High Commissioner Bachelet mentioned that the OHCHR recognizes the importance of “new technologies and human rights” as new opportunities and challenges in the field of international human rights and is increasing relevant activities, and also that she hopes to have close consultations with the ROK in the field.
