The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the Ministry of Education and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will hold “the 4th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education (GCED)” at the Dragon City Hotel, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on September 3 and 4.

The conference, under the theme “Reconciliation, Peace and Global Citizenship Education,” is expected to be attended by more than 700 participants including experts in educational policy at home and abroad such as UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education Ms. Stefania Giannini, Secretary to the Ministry of Education of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Mr. Nihal Ranasinghe, Technical Deputy Minister of Education of the Republic of Guatemala Mr. Hector Canto Mejia, Superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Mr. Cho Hee-yeon, activists, teachers and students. During the conference, the participants will share views on ways to practice GCED.

In his opening remarks to be delivered on September 3, Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy Mr. Kim Joon-hyung will emphasize the role and potential of GCED in accelerating reconciliation and peace in various disputes and conflicts around the world, and will deliver a message of commitment by the ROK government to continue its promotion of GCED in the future.

The ROK has contributed to the inclusion of GCED in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, and has played an active role in promoting GCED as part of the international education agenda by, for instance, jointly establishing the “Group of Friends for GCED” with the State of Qatar in 2017.

The upcoming meeting is expected to bring both domestic and international attention to GCED, a topic in which the ROK has played a leading role from the very beginning. Furthermore, the event is expected to create a platform for global discussion on the way forward for GCED to contribute to the achievement of universal values such as peace, human rights and cultural diversity.
