Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Relations Kim In-chul

June 27, 2019  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

First, Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha will attend and deliver opening remarks at the 1st International Conference on “Action with Women and Peace” to take place in Seoul on July 2 and 3.

In her opening remarks, Minister Kang will review the efforts made to date by the international community to combat sexual violence in conflict; and will underscore the importance of preventing such violence and taking a victim/survivor-centered approach, as well as the importance of the roles and participation of governments and civil societies.

The upcoming Conference, the first international meeting to be held as part of the efforts to implement the “Action with Women and Peace” initiative launched by the ROK government in June 2018, will bring together major figures from governments and international organizations, survivors of sexual violence in conflict, and members of civic groups for discussions on ways for the international community to work together in combating and preventing sexual violence in conflict.

Moving along, June being the month of remembrance, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Sei-young will visit on June 28 the Korea Veterans Health Service in Suwon, where patriots and veterans as well as bereaved families of fallen patriots live.

The visit is expected to serve as an opportunity to extend respect and appreciation to patriots and veterans and to recall the significance of patriotism.

Lastly, on the same day, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Tae-ho will hold the 4th meeting of the Republic of Korea-Mongolia Joint Committee with Minister of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia Namsrai Tserenbat at the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the forthcoming Joint Committee meeting, the two sides will discuss ways to deepen and step up cooperation between the two countries. The meeting is expected to help further enhance exchanges and cooperation with Mongolia, the ROK’s major partner for its New Northern Policy.
