Outcome of Telephone Conversation between Foreign Ministers of Korea and India

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong had his first telephone conversation with External Affairs Minister of India Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on March 9 since his inauguration and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest, including the bilateral relations between Korea and India, a major cooperation partner for Korea’s New Southern Policy, response to COVID-19, and cooperation in the international arena.

 

2. Foreign Minister Chung and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar took note that the two countries have maintained their special strategic partnership at the highest level based on the deep friendship and trust between President Moon Jae-in and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and agreed to reinforce substantive cooperation through closer communication despite the COVID-19 situation.

 

° In particular, the two sides agreed to actively seek ways to resume high-level exchanges, including the foreign ministerial joint committee meeting and the foreign and defense (2+2) vice ministerial meeting, as soon as the COVID-19 situation improves.

 

° The two sides also agreed to make concerted efforts to overcome COVID-19 of the international community.

 

3. Foreign Minister Chung explained the Korean government’s efforts to establish permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stated that India will support the efforts for substantive progress in the Korean Peninsula peace process as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2021-2022 term.

 

4. Foreign Minister Chung and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar agreed to work actively together in responding to climate change, including at the Partnering for Green Growth and Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit.
