ROK-U.S. High-level Consultations to Take Place during Visit to ROK by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea

1. Mr. Stephen Biegun, Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea of the United States, will visit the Republic of Korea on July 7-9.

 

2. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha will meet with Deputy Secretary Biegun at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the morning of July 8, after which Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Sei-young and the Deputy Secretary will hold the 8th ROK-U.S. Vice Foreign Ministerial Strategic Dialogue to discuss the full range of key ROK-U.S. issues aimed at deepening and advancing the bilateral relations and to exchange an extensive range of views on regional and global issues.

 

° Vice Minister Cho has communicated closely with Deputy Secretary Biegun, including through a total of 10 multilateral teleconferences on COVID-19 response among seven countries in the region and a number of bilateral telephone conversations. The 8th ROK-U.S. Vice Foreign Ministerial Strategic Dialogue will mark the first face-to-face meeting between the two sides since Deputy Secretary Biegun’s inauguration to the post on December 21, 2019.

 

3. After the Strategic Dialogue, Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will have a meeting with Mr. Stephen Biegun, Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea.

 

° In the meeting between the chief negotiators for the North Korean nuclear issue, the two sides will share assessments of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and continue to discuss ways to manage it in a stable manner. They also plan to cover in depth ways for the ROK and the U.S. to work together in achieving substantive progress toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.
