Telephone Conversation between ROK Minister of Foreign Affairs and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs on June 15

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha had a telephone conversation with Ms. Raychelle Omamo, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, on the afternoon of June 15 at the latter’s request and exchanged views on response to COVID-19.

 

° The Minister and the Cabinet Secretary noted with appreciation that, in the process of addressing difficulties due to COVID-19, the Republic of Korea and Kenya have been able to reaffirm their close relations, including through the ROK’s humanitarian assistance to Kenya, such as the provision of diagnostic kits and face masks, as well as Kenya’s cooperation for return home of ROK nationals.

 

2. Cabinet Secretary Omamo extended appreciation to the ROK government and private sector for their timely provision of quarantine equipment, including COVID-19 diagnostic kits, to Kenya. She added that, also by sharing its successful and professional experiences in the fight against COVID-19, the ROK has given much help to Kenya on its COVID-19 response.

 

° Minister Kang explained that the ROK will help Kenya and other African countries overcome COVID-19, including by providing humanitarian assistance on the bilateral level and sharing its experiences through webinars on “K-quarantine.”

 

3. Cabinet Secretary Omamo, mentioning that the Kenyan government has been implementing social control measures in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, asked about the return to normal daily lives in the ROK, including the opening of schools, amid the COVID-19 situation. Minister Kang explained that the ROK had resumed in-school classes and has kept commercial facilities operating while thoroughly tracing the infected and complying with sanitary measures.

 

4. The Minister and the Cabinet Secretary agreed to continue cooperation at international organizations, including the United Nations, in order to bring a complete end to COVID-19 and to pursue health cooperation.

 

5. Minister Kang noted that, despite the difficulty in traveling due to COVID-19, ROK nationals could return home safely thanks to the prompt and active cooperation of the Kenyan government.

 

6. The Minister and the Cabinet Secretary had previously attended the video conference of female foreign ministers held in April and discussed ways for enhancing women’s role in responding to COVID-19 and for their empowerment. In their telephone conversation, they agreed to continue bilateral and multilateral cooperation in responding to COVID-19.
