ROK-China Senior Officials’ Meeting Held via Video Conference

1. Deputy Minister for Political Affairs Kim Gunn held the Republic of Korea-People’s Republic of China Senior Officials’ Meeting with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Luo Zhaohui in the form of a video conference on the morning of June 11, and discussed cooperation among the ROK, China and Japan, the ASEAN+3 cooperation, and other issues of mutual interest.

 

2. In the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on ways to pursue cooperation among the ROK, China and Japan, including the issue of holding a trilateral summit, chaired by the ROK this year.

 

o The two sides agreed to continue close communication and consultations to hold the trilateral summit within this year despite difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries to deepen and expand trilateral cooperation in various areas, including responding to changes resulting from COVID-19.

 

3. In addition, the two sides exchanged views on ways to increase trilateral cooperation within the ASEAN+3 (APT) mechanism.

 

o The two sides noted with appreciation that the Special ASEAN+3 Video Summit held on April 14 served as an opportunity to muster regional countries’ will to collaborate in tackling COVID-19, and recognized the need to continue cooperation to ensure the faithful implementation of follow-up measures to the summit.

 

4. The meeting was held as part of communication between senior officials of the two countries in charge of the ROK-China-Japan cooperation. The two sides agreed to continue close communication and consultations to advance trilateral cooperation.
