1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha had a telephone conversation with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó on the afternoon of June 8 around the 1st anniversary of the boat accident in Hungary and discussed ways for cooperation on COVID-19 response as well as development of the relations between the Republic of Korea and Hungary.

2. Minister Kang mentioned that she found it meaningful that memorial events had been held in Budapest and Seoul respectively and that a ceremony had taken place to award medals of merit to a Korean rescue team to mark the 1st anniversary of the boat accident in Hungary on May 29. She also expressed appreciation to Minister Szijjártó for attending the commemorative event and extending condolences.

° Minister Szijjártó, once again relaying Hungary’s heartfelt condolences, said that the country will cooperate actively with continued interest in holding memorial events with the bereaved families and moving forward the procedure to ensure accountability of those responsible for the accident.

3. Minister Kang noted with appreciation that the spread of COVID-19 has been managed relatively stably in Hungary. She went on to explain that the COVID-19 situation in the ROK has entered a stage of stabilization, but amid the recent possibility of the re-spread of the virus particularly at some business establishments, the country has been responding to the situation without loosening its vigilance.

° Minister Kang extended appreciation to the Hungarian government for, in the process of responding to COVID-19, supporting Koreans’ return home as well as fully permitting Korean business people’s entry into Hungary in exception to entry restrictions.

° Minister Szijjártó explained that the ROK had become the largest investor country for Hungary in 2019, stressing that Korean companies’ investment in Hungary is very important for the bilateral relations between the ROK and Hungary.

4. The two Ministers agreed to make joint efforts to bring an early end to the COVID-19 crisis and thereby to once again normalize exchanges between the two countries.
