1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha and Union Minister for International Cooperation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Kyaw Tin, following their telephone conversation on May 15, exchanged celebratory letters to mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Myanmar.

2. The two Ministers noted with appreciation that since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1975, the ROK and Myanmar have developed close cooperative relations on all fronts, including trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges, and that, in particular, the two summits in 2019 had helped bring the two countries closer than ever. They agreed to work more closely together to develop the bilateral relations, as this year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

3. Minister Kang expressed confidence that the ROK and Myanmar will be able to overcome the COVID-19 crisis together through close bilateral cooperation and suggested that the two countries continue to support and to cooperate with each other as reliable partners on the basis of trust and friendship.

4. Union Minister Kyaw Tin voiced belief that the ROK government’s New Southern Policy will help not only facilitate the development of the ROK-Myanmar relations but also further promote cooperation among the ASEAN-ROK, Mekong-ROK and EAS frameworks for the peace and prosperity in the region. He also expressed confidence that cooperation under ASEAN+3 will contribute to efforts to respond to COVID-19 and to revive economy in the post-COVID-19 era.
