Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Re-elected as President of Assembly and Chair of Council of GGGI

1. Former Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon was re-elected as the President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) on February 20 by the 36 GGGI member countries through consensus.

 

o The President and Chair (two-year term, extendable for a second term) presides over the Assembly and the Council of GGGI; represents GGGI at major international conferences, including the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and the sessions of the UN General Assembly and the UN Environment Assembly; and supports GGGI and its activities.

 

2. During President and Chair Ban’s term, the international community’s interest and recognition of GGGI’s activities have been enhanced significantly, and eight new member states have joined the organization (the number of member countries increased from 28 to 36).

 

3. The re-election of former UN Secretary-General Ban, a symbolic figure for global response to climate change, including the conclusion of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is expected to contribute to gaining political momentum for continued development of GGGI and raising the international community’s awareness of the organization.

 

4. The government of the Republic of Korea, as the largest donor to GGGI, Vice-President of the Assembly and Vice-Chair of the Council as well as Audit Contact Point, will support GGGI’s efforts to grow into a well-established international organization, and work in close cooperation with GGGI to ensure the success of the second P4G Summit to be held in Seoul this year.
