1. The first session of the “Unboxing Korea” event took place on February 11 with the aim to provide an opportunity for foreigners residing in the Republic of Korea (ROK), including the diplomatic corps and correspondents, to deepen understanding and experiences in the history, traditions, values and culture of Korea.

° The event brought together about 180 people, including members of the diplomatic corps, foreigners working at international organizations and foreign correspondents in the ROK.

2. “Unboxing Korea” is an inbound public diplomacy program newly launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2020. The Ministry has so far largely conducted its public diplomacy activities in foreign countries through its overseas missions. With 2020 marking the 10th anniversary since the Ministry started to fully implement public diplomacy, the goal of “Unboxing Korea” is to help foreigners residing in the ROK broaden their understanding of Korea.

° “Unboxing Korea” is composed mainly of three pillars: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will invite diplomats in the ROK for a consultative meeting on public diplomacy; host a series of lectures and programs introducing the culture and knowledge of Korea; and designate honorary Ambassadors to join efforts in various outreach programs.

3. The first session of Unboxing Korea came as part of the second pillar. It featured welcome remarks by Mr. Chang Jae-bok, Ambassador for Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; a special lecture on science in the Joseon Dynasty by Ms. Song Hyegyung, Executive Director of the Korean Spirit & Culture Promotion Project; and an opportunity to experience sebae, the traditional Korean bow performed on Lunar New Year’s Day.

° The second pillar consists of lectures to enhance understanding of Korea, cultural experiences and visits to cultural sites, and meetings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with private organizations, will plan and develop throughout the year programs that can help efficiently introduce Korea.

4. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as it continues to oversee government-wide public diplomacy activities, will continue to engage the foreigners residing in the ROK and increase channels through which they can systematically learn more about Korea’s culture, knowledge, and policies. By doing so, the Ministry will lead the efforts to fulfill the vision of public diplomacy -- “communicating the charms of Korea to the world, together with the people.”
