Minister of Foreign Affairs Attends G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang, Kyung-wha attended the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Nagoya, Japan, on November 22-23.


° The Meeting brought together delegates from the G20 member states and nine invited guest countries, and consisted of sessions on three themes “Promotion of Free Trade and Global Governance,” “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs),” and “Africa,” during which the participants discussed the G20’s policy direction for a sustainable global economic growth.

2. Minister Kang highlighted the roles and responsibility of the G20 to overcome challenges and risks to the world economy, and, in particular, called for the following:


° Active, intense consultations to prevent the dysfunctional collapse of the World Trade Organization (WTO)’s Appellate Body, which could happen in December.

° High-level support for the WTO e-commerce negotiations to formulate new rules for the digital era

° Preventing disruptions to global value chains (GVCs), via which the entire world is inseparably interconnected, and strengthening the rules-based multilateral trading system


3. During the discussion on the SDGs, Minister Kang, Kyung-wha introduced the ROK government’s K-SDGs as well as its efforts to expand official development assistance and to reduce marine plastic litter.


4. In her remarks, Minister Kang spoke about the 2019 ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit and the 1st Mekong- Republic of KOREA Summit to take place in the ROK next week as well as the Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit to be held in the country next year, and asked for attention and support of the international community.
