4th ROK-Japan-China Cyber Policy Consultation Held

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the 4th Republic of Korea (ROK)-Japan-People’s Republic of China Cyber Policy Consultation in Beijing, China, on Monday, November 18. At the consultation, the participants discussed ways for cooperation in the area of cybersecurity.

 

The consultation brought together Mr. Kim Gunn, Ambassador for International Security Affairs of the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Takeshi Akahori, Ambassador in charge of Cyber Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Mr. Wang Lei, Coordinator for Cyber Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China leading their respective delegations, as well as officials from cybersecurity-related agencies.

 

2. At the consultation, the three sides discussed the recent situation of cyberspace, including cyber threats, international and regional process such as the United Nations (UN) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and possible areas for trilateral cooperation.

 

In particular, the three sides shared the understanding that discussions on cybersecurity norms at the UN are essential to creating a safe cyberspace. In addition, they explored ways for cooperation on joint response to cybercrimes among law enforcement agencies, exchanging information among Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) and sharing experiences in preparing for holding Olympic Games.

 

3. The trilateral cyber policy consultation has taken place in the three countries on a rotating basis since 2014. This event is deemed to have been established as a consultative mechanism aiming to enhance regional cooperation in the area of cybersecurity.
