1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha attended the 15th MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in New York on September 26 on the occasion of the 74th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

2. The participants exchanged views on current international issues, including ways to strengthen multilateralism- and rules-based international trade order, recent developments on the Korean Peninsula, migration and development in Latin America, and ASEAN outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

° Minister Kang, explaining the efforts of the government of the Republic of Korea to achieve complete denuclearization and establish permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, asked for continued attention and further support from MIKTA countries. The other participants took note of the progress in the situation on the Korean Peninsula and expressed support for the ROK government’s efforts.

° The participants agreed on the need to strengthen multilateralism, with the UN at its core, in order to resolve current global issues, such as those concerning refugees and climate change. On that note, they agreed to expand MIKTA’s role in reinforcing multilateralism.

3. The participants agreed to consult more closely on ways to increase MIKTA’s contribution and visibility in resolving issues facing the international community, as MIKTA, which is in its sixth year since being launched in September 2013, has seen considerable progress in institutionalization.

° In particular, Minister Kang mentioned that the ROK, as next year’s chair following Mexico this year, will make endeavors to enhance the visibility of MIKTA’s activities and to add impetus based on opinions from the other member states.
