UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Privacy to Visit ROK

1. United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy Joseph Cannataci will pay an official visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK) from July 15 to 26.

 

2. During his visit to the ROK, Special Rapporteur Cannataci will meet with officials of government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of National Defense, the Korea Communications Commission, the Personal Information Protection Commission, and the Korean National Police Agency, as well as the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court. He will hold a press conference at the Press Center in Seoul at 14:30, July 26, concluding his schedule in the ROK.

 

° A report on the outcome of the Special Rapporteur’s visit to the ROK and recommendations will be submitted to the UNHRC.

 

3. The Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy was mandated by a 2015 UNHRC resolution as part of the Special Procedures of the UNHRC. Special Rapporteur Cannataci was appointed to his post in July 2015 and is currently on duty.

 

° The Special Rapporteur on the right to privacy is mandated to gather information, including on the current situation, challenges and exemplary practices of the right to privacy across the world, and to recommend individual countries to improve their relevant institutions.
