Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Sei-young Meets with Japanese Ambassador to ROK

1. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Sei-young received a courtesy call from Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Korea Yasumasa Nagamine on the morning of May 31. During the courtesy call, the Ambassador extended congratulations to the Vice Minister on his inauguration; and the two sides exchanged views on key issues between the two countries.


2. Ambassador Nagamine handed a letter of sympathy addressed to Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha over the tour boat accident in Hungary; and expressed deep condolences and sympathy over the accident. Vice Minister Cho extended condolences and consolation over a number of people having been killed or injured in the mass stabbing that had occurred in Japan on May 28.


※ On May 28, the ROK government sent to the Japanese government a letter of sympathy, signed by the ROK’s Ambassador to Japan Nam Gwan-pyo and addressed to Minister for Foreign Affairs Taro Kono, over the mass stabbing that had occurred in Kawasaki, Japan. 

- On May 30, the Japanese side, in its letter signed by Minister Taro Kono and addressed to Korean Ambassador to Japan Nam, expressed its appreciation for the aforementioned letter of condolences from the Korean side and delivered its condolences to the Korean side as well as to the victims of the tour boat accident that had happened in Hungary on May 29 and their bereaved families. On May 31, the Japanese government sent another letter of condolences, signed by Japanese Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Nagamine, to Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

3. With regard to the Japanese government’s announcement on May 30 of its plan to strengthen inspections of fishery imports, Vice Minister Cho asked the Japanese government not to conduct the strengthened inspections in a disguised discriminatory manner against Korean fishery products.
