Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee to Attend 75th Session of UN ESCAP

1. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Lee Tae-ho will attend the 75th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) to be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

 

The UNESCAP is one of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’s five regional commissions established in 1947 to foster economic and social development in the Asia-Pacific region.

 

Overview of the 75th Session of the UN ESCAP

- Date: May 27-31, 2019 (ministerial segment 27-28, senior officials segment 29-31)

- Theme: Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality

 

o At the upcoming Session, the participants will review the implementation of “the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific” being pursued by the UN ESCAP. They will also engage in a general debate on this year’s theme, “Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.”

 

2. In his address, Vice Minister Lee will underscore the need to overcome inequalities in the Asia-Pacific region, and introduce the ROK’s national strategy for building an inclusive nation as well as the New Southern Policy, which the ROK is pursuing to promote regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. Vice Minister Lee will also stress the importance of peace on the Korean Peninsula, and request the international community’s continued interest and support.

 

o In addition, Vice Minister Lee will meet with Executive Secretary of the UN ESCAP Armida Alisjahbana, and discuss ways to increase strategic cooperation and seek projects between the ROK and ESCAP.
