ROK-US-Japan and ROK-Japan Meetings of Top Negotiators on North Korean Nuclear Issue Take Place

1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, had a luncheon meeting on February 9 with United States Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun and Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kenji Kanasugi, who are on a visit to the Republic of Korea. They shared the results of the working-level talks between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea held in Pyeongyang, and agreed to make active efforts together to make a success of the second US-North Korea summit.

 

o In particular, the ROK, US and Japanese top negotiators said that the latest working-level talks between the US and North Korea not only gave more impetus to the overall process of dialogue, but also served as an important foundation for complete denuclearization and the establishment of a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. They also agreed on the need to make substantive progress to achieve the goals.

 

2. Following the luncheon meeting between the ROK, US and Japanese top negotiators, Special Representative Lee and Director-General Kanasugi had a meeting this afternoon. In the meeting, the two sides discussed in depth how the ROK, the US and Japan, as well as the ROK and Japan, can work together to achieve complete denuclearization and to establish a peace regime.
