ROK Government to Send Special Envoy to Inauguration Ceremony of Brazilian President

1. The government of the Republic of Korea will send a special envoy -- Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the National Assembly -- to the inauguration ceremony of President of the Federative Republic of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro set to take place in Brasilia on January 1, 2019. Special envoy Jeon will be accompanied by another member of the National Assembly, Choi In-ho.

 

2. Brazil is the ROK's friend that has promoted close, friendly and cooperative ties with the ROK across the board since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1959. With the year 2019 marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries will further enhance their "comprehensive cooperative partnership." 

 

° Since the official visit to Brazil in 1996 by then President Kim Young-sam -- the first of its kind by an ROK President -- the two countries have robustly conducted high-level exchanges, including eight visits by the Presidents of the two countries.

 

° Brazil is the ROK’s NO. 1 investment destination and No. 2 trade partner in Latin America. In May 2018, the ROK embarked on negotiations on a trade agreement with the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), where Brazil is a member.

 

3. At the inauguration ceremony of new President Bolsonaro, the special delegation will extend congratulations on the inauguration of the new Brazilian government and deliver President Moon Jae-in’s letter, in which the President will have expressed hope for stronger friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
