Korean Professor Elected as Member of UNIDROIT Governing Council

1. Professor of law at Ewha Womans University Kim In-ho was elected to serve a five-year term (2019-2023) on the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) at the 77th session of its General Assembly held in Rome on December 6.

 

President of Transnational Law and Business University Graduate School of Law Lyou Byung-hwa has served five consecutive terms on the UNIDROIT Governing Council since 1994, contributing to the body’s activities.

 

2. UNIDROIT was established in Rome in 1940 to seek a harmony among and a gradual unification of private laws of different countries. The (63-member) organization contributes to the promotion of international cooperation on private law by drafting and adopting a number of international conventions and model bills in the areas of international commercial and transactions laws.

 

3. The UNIDROIT Governing Council, which makes decisions regarding the overall direction of UNIDROIT operations, is composed of 27 people, including the President, 25 members elected by the General Assembly, and a judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

 

4. During the service of Professor Kim on the Governing Council, the Republic of Korea is expected to continue taking an active part in UNIDROIT’s activities, to have its position effectively reflected in the work toward a harmony and uniformity among private laws of different countries, and thereby to enhance its standing in international legal organizations.
